What is the treatment?

UVB Phototherapy “ NARROWBAND UVB”, it is one of the most common and famous Phototherapy is performed for various skin disease world wide. In this treatment a specific wavelength of ultraviolet radiation (UV RAYS) “311 to 312 nm is given to treat different skin issues.

Who needs this treatment, and at what age group?

Besides above mentioned diseases, UVB phototherapy can be used in other skin diseases as well. Depending upon the skin condition any age group can get treated.

How frequently should it be done?

UVB Phototherapy is initially done 2-3 times a week and then it is done once or twice a week depending on the condition of the skin from patient to patient.

Narrow band UVB light is absorbed by the epidermis and superficial dermis. Nuclear DNA acts as an endogenous chromophore & initiates cascade of events leading to suppression of DNA synthesis. This property comes very handy in conditions like psoriasis.
This treatment is very safe. But has to be done under supervision of a dermatologist.
This treatment has side effects like redness and slight burning sensation but usually subsides after some time. The dosage and duration is titrated by the treating physician depending upon the response.
Use sunscreen lotions as and when required. Avoid direct sun exposure. During the therapy one must wear UVB protective glasses.
