Birth spot causes social stigma to the patients especially if they are present on the face and neck areas of a patient. Some birth marks are stubborn and cannot be removed with the help of lasers but some respond very nicely to the laser. These birth spots should be diagnosed properly so that the correct treatment modality can be given. In Birth spot removal one should always go slow, starting with a test patch and then gradually the intensity of the treatment can be increased depending upon the response of the test patch. Birth spot removal in Delhi should be chosen after a consultation with the dermatologist as its diagnosis is very important before starting any treatment.
What are birthmarks?
Coloured marks or blemishes that are present during birth or develop right after birth are known as birthmarks. It is not fully understood why they occur. Birthmarks usually disappear with age and may not require medical treatment unless it is either a cosmetic necessity or a malignant lesion.
- ■ Birthmarks are not affiliated to heredity.
- ■ Some of the causes of birthmarks are attributed to abnormal blood vessels
- ■ They occur right under the skin and are clusters of pigmented cells
- ■ Birthmarks are uncommon amongst Asians
Types of birthmarks
Birthmarks are generally of two types – vascular and pigmented.
Vascular birthmarks – Vascular birthmarks are usually caused due to abnormal blood vessels under the skin and are red, pink or purple in colour. They occur in the head and neck area though it can materialize anywhere. The birthmarks appear red when the surface blood vessels are affected and for deep blood vessels they appear blue.
Salmon patches – Salmon patches are called stork bites or macular stains – they are thin, light pink or red in colour occurring in clusters on the skin – they are flat and usually found on the back of the neck.
Infantile hemangioma – Infantile hemangiomas are red in colour and occur at birth – they quickly increase in size in the first six months after the birth of the baby and disappear at 7 yrs.
- ■ Near the eye, mouth, nose and nappy areas – require specialist attention
- ■ Bleeding hemangiomas
- ■ Airway hemangiomas can cause difficulty in breathing
- ■ Bowel hemangiomas can cause blood in stool
Port wine Stain – Port wine stains are red and purple marks and vary in size – affect only one side of the body on chest, face and back but can occur on other parts of the body as well.
- ■ Sturge-Weber syndrome
- ■ Glaucoma
- ■ Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome
- ■ Soft-tissue hypertrophy
Pigmented birthmarks – Pigmented birthmarks are clustered melanin or pigment cells and usually brown in colour.
Café-au-Lait spots – Only one or two café-au-lait spots appear at birth but more than six spots require a physician’s attention. They are coffee-coloured patches in skin.
Congenital melanocytic nevi – Congenital melanocytic nevi are also called congenital moles which are large – present at birth, they are brown or black in colour.
- ■ Change in colour and size
- ■ Bleeding
- ■ Itching
- ■ Inflammation
- ■ Pain
- ■ Skin cancer
Becker’s Nevus or Becker’s Melanosis is a late onset epidermal nevus. It is usually one-sided and form a brown hairy patch over the upper back and chest.
Nevus of Ota – Nevus of ota is benign and occurs in the form of high volumes of pigmentation around the eyes. It can affect the choroid, cilliary body, the iris, the sclera and the eyelids. It is common for patients with nevus of ota to develop intraocular and choroidal melanomas.

Tests- For a big birthmark, a patch test is usually conducted. Series of lasers are emitted at different settings to check the response of the area. The rest of the treatment is undertaken in responsive wavelengths.
Nd:YAG laser: Laser stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Nd:YAG stands for Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet.
Properties of the Nd:YAG-
- ■ The Nd:YAG is a crystal popularly used as a medium for solid-state lasers.
- ■ It has a wavelength of 1064 nm with a capacity to reach the deep layers of the skin tissue
- ■ The laser activity in the crystal is instigated by the neodymium ion
- ■ 2 wave lengths are produced by the Nd:YAG under Q-switched mode – 1064 nm and 532 nm – which are useful to combat superficial lesions
Pulses of laser light target red pigmented areas of the skin typically at 50 milliseconds pulse duration and an output energy of 150-250 J/cm2. This wavelength of high energy laser light will heat the target area and destroy the sick cells. A topical anaesthetic may or may not be required for the procedure. Protective eye wear is provided to the patient during the course of the treatment. The hand held device activates the laser as it is placed against the skin. Once administered, an ice pack is applied to soothe the skin.
Treatments at Satya Skin Hair Clinic are safe and effective and involve minimum or no downtime.
