Other baldness patterns

In this article, baldness patterns other than the male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness are described.

Traction alopecia

Sometimes, hair will be subjected to persistent and repetitive pulling on its roots. Effort to make tight braids and ponytails can lead to extra force on the hair roots, which can lead loss of hair. So when you opt hairstyles, it is better that you choose a style which does not hurt the hair follicles.

Trichotillomania

Some boys and girls have the ugly habit of pulling the hair or twisting them voluntarily. The patches of hair loss in this case, show the pattern of the hair break off. Treatment to this type of hair loss is related to behavioral change, which can be achieved through counseling or with the help of a psychiatrist. Antidepressants and anxiety medications are very useful to stop or control trichotillomania.

Tinea capitis

Tinea capitis is the hair loss due to fungus infection. This hair loss is generally found in school going children and is very prevalent in Africa and America. This is very uncommon in adults. This type of hair loss is accompanied by dermatitis. Oral antifungal medication has been found to be very effective in curing the infection. Sharing combs, hats etc transmits tinea capitis.

Telogen effluvium

As a result of shock, the general hair growth pattern may get altered and about 30-40 % of hair may be subjected to three month telogen period as against the normal 10 % hair. This hair is lost causing severe hair loss problem. No treatment is needed for this type of hair loss as most of them reappear in due course.
