What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure undertaken to reshape the nose. It can change the angle of the nose, make it smaller or larger in conjunction with the upper lip and even alter the tip of the nose.

Cosmetic indications

  • ■ Correction of enlarged nostrils
  • ■ Resizing and positioning the width of the bridge of the nose
  • ■ Correction of bulbous, upturned and drooping nose tips
  • ■ Correcting any nasal asymmetry
  • ■ Clearing any visible depressions on the nose or the bridge of the nose

Functional indications

  • ■ Obstruction in breathing
  • ■ Nasal trauma and unsatisfactory appearance
  • ■ Congenital nasal defects
  • ■ Deformity due to infection or tumour

Besides correcting functional deformities rhinoplasty is a very popular, surgical cosmetic procedure. Operative manipulation of the cartilage, bone and skin lining can modify the aesthetic appearance of the nose. Surgery is performed with an open or closed procedure. Once the incisions are made along the nose, the tissues of the nose are raised giving access to the shape and structure of the nose. Nasal structure is then enlarged using pieces of cartilage extracted from other parts of the body. Depending on the need, the nasal structure can be enlarged or reduced. Tubes and splints are placed internally to support the nose and to aid healing.

Open rhinoplasty- Major nose reshapings are done in open rhinoplasty. Incisions are made vertically along the columella separating both parts of the nostrils. Nasal anatomy is viewed as the skin and soft tissue is lifted off the structures of the nose.

Secondary rhinoplasty- When previous nose surgeries develop problems, then a revision rhinoplasty or secondary rhinoplasty is done. The problems could be complex and small and surgery can be done as an open surgery or closed surgery. Secondary rhinoplasty is difficult and requires precision.

Closed rhinoplasty- In a closed rhinoplasty incisions are made inside the nose. The skin and tissues is separated from the supporting framework of bone and the cartilage. The exposed bone and cartilage are then reshaped and achieve the new and improved shape.

Filler rhinoplasty- Injectable fillers are used to fill the depressions to achieve sharp and smooth edges of the nose. The angle of the tip of the nose can also be changed to restore symmetry.
