Botox is a treatment done to relax the wrinkle causing muscles on the face and neck and helps in smoothening of dynamic wrinkles like frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. It is a non-surgical procedure and the effects are temporary; lasting around 4-6 months. It is one of the most commonly done cosmetic treatments worldwide. Botox is also used therapeutically for conditions associated with muscle spasm like cerebral palsy, cervical dystonia and blepharospasm: it is also used to control excessive sweating in underarms, palms and soles. Why do we need this treatment?
This treatment is a very effective anti-ageing tool; it relaxes the expression causing muscles and helps to give a youthful appearance. What are the indications of botox treatment?
Botox treatment can be done after 4-8 months of the first administration and again depending upon individual requirement. As every individual is different, their needs are different, too.
Botox can be done in the age group of 18yrs- 65yrs for the above-mentioned cosmetic indications. It can be done for both male and female patients.
This is a safe treatment when done by an experienced dermatologist with proper training for the procedure and under aseptic conditions.
Most commonly, a patient may experience slight pain on the injection site, redness, mild swelling or bruising. Less common and temporary side effects include a frozen face appearance, that is, lack of expressions and some degree of facial asymmetry. On rare occasions, a patient may have itching, wheezing, skin rash, dizziness, shortness of breath and faintness. In very rare cases, botox may spread beyond the intended site of action and cause weakness of muscles of eyes, speech, breathing, swallowing or bladder control.
The effects of treatment wear off in around 6 months, so the lines and wrinkles start showing again. So, one should continue the treatment for maintenance of effect.
Avoid intake of painkillers, vitamin E, gingko biloba, green tea one week ahead of procedure as these are blood thinners and increase the chances of bruising. After the procedure, do not bend or lie down for 4 hours post-injection, do not massage the area, avoid heavy exercise for 24 hours, avoid facials and massages for 2 weeks and radiofrequency treatments for 4 weeks. Follow all the instructions given by the doctor and inform if there is any allergic reaction after the treatment. It’s a lunch time procedure and one can resume activities immediately after the treatment.
